The partners named it Cucharamama (CU-CHAH-RAH-MAM-AH), a whimsical name that means, literally, "mother spoon." For Maricel, co-owner of Cucharama, who had done research in the Ecuadorian highlands, the name was full of meaning. The longest spoon in a highland kitchen, the one women use to stir the ever-present soup, is called "Cucharamama." This is a multipurpose tool that women use not only for cooking, but to scold misbehaving husbands and unruly children, and to round up cuyes, the small guinea pigs that are a delicacy in the Andes. For Maricel, Cucharamama became a symbol of the women who reign over their kitchens with their spoons and their good cooking. A most fitting icon for a restaurant ruled by women.

Joey’s BBQ

After traveling to Memphis for business for many years, I became addicted to that true southern style BBQ. Being from the metropolitan New York area, it was very difficult to find that same delicious tasting BBQ. So my business partner and I decided to come up with our own sauce and dry rub for pulled pork BBQ. After tireless months of trying various combinations, we finally made a sauce and dry rub that stood up to our standards. We then purchased a specially designed BBQ pit that was attached to a trailer. We started to sell our pulled pork product at festivals and events in the tri-state area. To our delight, it was a big hit from the very first event. For three years we continued to attend many events to introduce to people and to offer them a truly delicious southern style BBQ. Hoboken, NJ was always one of our most successful events. It was in 2005 that we decided to open a BBQ restaurant in Hoboken. Since then we have offered many new products to our menu in that same traditional style BBQ. We offer pulled pork, brisket, babyback ribs, whole and pulled chicken, jumbo wings and many delicious sides.
